An inquest stated that Helene Todd, the wife of John Todd a former Army mechanic, died from a malignant mesothelioma tumour after years of cleaning asbestos fibres from his overalls. Mr. Todd served in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for 22 years and the military vehicles he worked on, while stationed inGermanyduring the 1970s, used asbestos for heat protection. After every shift, Mr. Todd brought home his dirty overalls, which his wife cleaned.  The former Army mechanic has been awarded an out of court settlement following his wife’s death from an asbestos-related disease.

After Helene’s death in 2010, aged 66, preparations began to lodge a compensation claim as “We worked it out that the only time that she [Mrs Todd] had ever been near asbestos was possibly working with my overalls,” said Mr Todd. Mr. Todd was awarded a £110,000 by the MoD in an out-of-court settlement and he stated that he is “appreciative” of the arrangements which will see him receiving about £95,000 after deductions. “They’ve [the MoD] accepted straight away and they’ve paid,” said Mr Todd. “They’ve paid a reasonable amount… and I’m happy.” In a statement, the MoD said: “We extend our condolences to Mr. John Todd on the death of his wife, Helene.
