What is non-licensed asbestos (Cat B) training?

Last Updated on October 6, 2025 by Phil Collins

Non-licensed asbestos training (which used to be referred to as Cat B training) is one of the many types of asbestos training courses that we provide at Armco, and it is designed for individuals, businesses and contractors who will knowingly disturb asbestos as part of their work.

Our training adheres to the Health and Safety Executive and the 2012 Control of Asbestos regulations, and is approved and audited by IATP (Independent Asbestos Training Providers).

Who needs non-licensed asbestos training?

In the UK, it’s a legal requirement that anyone whose occupation knowingly may lead them to disturb asbestos have non-licensed asbestos training. This is not a course for occupations that remove licensed asbestos, as these require more comprehensive training courses.

Occupations that may need non-licensed asbestos training include but are not limited to:

How often is non-licensed training required?

There is no legal requirement to refresh non-licensed asbestos training, provided that you can prove you have retained the information provided in the course and can operate safely around asbestos. However, we recommend obtaining a refreshers course on an annual basis, as this will ensure that you (and any staff you have) are fully compliant and safe in the workplace, which is the ultimate goal of these courses. We also offer refresher courses which can be carried out flexibly; at our premises or yours.

Failure to provide or receive any training can result in serious fines and penalties, or even (in extreme cases) jail time. If you are unsure whether your industry requires training, or which training you need, please get in touch and we will be happy to advise you so that you and your business can remain health and safety compliant.

What is covered in non-licensed asbestos training?

At Armco, our non-licensed asbestos training will provide you with all the necessary knowledge to be able to meet all safety and compliance needs, including being able to identify asbestos-containing materials (ACM), work with ACMs safely, how to correctly use PPE (personal protective equipment) such as respiratory personal equipment and implement control techniques and safe methods of working where asbestos may be present.

Our courses include bespoke training to suit your business’ requirements and staff needs, as well as live demonstrations and practical training for completing tasks specific to your business. We believe that for any training to be effective, it should reflect how you actually work on a day-to-day basis, so that you can benefit from our training immediately.
